PROPERTIES OF ESSENTIAL OILS

For well-being & health

''I will not venture to mention the antiquity and practice of medicine with essential oils in Egypt or elsewhere because we do not have enough concrete information to elaborate on the subject. We know that the coil which allowed the distillation of alcohol was created in the eleventh century by Avicene, but on the other hand we know the use of the plants themselves through a history written over more than 20 centuries, notably the writings of Dioscorides who at the time proposed a treatise on 519 medicinal plants. We don't have much more in the pharmacopoeia today...''Michel Sommerard

At the origin of this practice...

Aromatherapy has been recognized especially since René Maurice Gattefossé reawakened its therapeutic use in 1928 and published a work "AROMATHERAPY" which gave the name to this practice. I also had the chance to work with his grandson, because the Gattefossé family owns a farmhouse in Saint Rémy de Provence and we had the same Égrot brand open-fire copper still with which we distilled roses together.

In the 1960s, it was Dr Jean Valnet, a military doctor who brought together knowledge of phyto and aromatherapy in a work as well, addressing the general public and teaching this practice for which I thank him. He donated his recipes through a laboratory (Cosbionat) which does remarkable work and which financially supports our humanitarian action in Madagascar for the construction of schools. I also had the privilege of meeting Dr. Jean Valnet and learning from him.

Pread near us the passion has spread and I cannot name everyone, but I will talk about my friends, authors and or high-level scientists, Pierre Franchomme, Daniel Pénoël, Roger Jollois, Marcel Lavabre, Ian Kusmirek, Michael Scholes, Conie Bogart, veterinary Dr Françoise Heitz, Dr Jean Michel Morel from the University of Besançon, Dr Bérangère Arnal, and my professors at the Faculty of Pharmacy of Montpellier, THE Professor Anton, THE Professor Jacques Pellecuer, THE Pr Susplugas, THE Professor MichelParis, with whom I shared the joys of discovery and who even came to my farm in Madagascar and my close friend, Dr.Gérard Magnaudeixhe came too...
JI would also like to quote Pierre Boiteau who has carried out considerable botanical work in Madagascar and was able to treat diabetics lacking insulin thanks to a plant from Madagascar, jamblong kernel powder (rotra in Malagasy) which is a remarkable hypoglycemic agent.
Le Prospanker Albert Rakoto Ratsimamangawho founded IMRA in Madagascar and collated and verified ancestral knowledge of herbal medicine in all regions of the Big Island to perpetuate them and bring local natural remedies to the entire population. Today it's the Dr Delphin Rabehaja at the IMRA laboratory which analyzes our essential oils throughout the year to allow us to rectify our work if necessary and improve it. Plants have variability, essential oil too and sometimes it is necessary to dry plants better before distilling them or distilling them fresher for example, or after the fruit or flower depending on the results we are looking for .

The oilsessential

An essential oil is defined by the AFNOR NY 75-006 and ISO 9235 standards.
Essential oil is a complex plant aromatic volatile product that can be extracted from the plant using three different techniques; Steam distillation, cold expression, and pyrogenation.

1) Theresteam distillation using a still.

The plants are placed in a tank through which water vapor passes, carrying with it certain aromatic principles contained in the plants. The steam is then cooled in a serpentine immersed in cold water and in which it becomes liquid again, separating into two phases: one aqueous, composed of water and soluble plant principles, calledfloral water or hydrosol, and the other, composed of molecules insoluble in water, essential oil.

These two phases are separated by difference in gravity in a Florentine vase, or separator, or essencier. The majority of essential oils are lighter than water and their harvest is done at the top of the essence. Others, like cloves and cinnamon, are heavier than water and are harvested from the bottom of the essencier whose shape is adapted. For certain oils such as cinnamon bark, we must install cascading essenciers to collect the heavy and light phases and then combine them to obtain the total.

The aqueous part loaded with aromatic principles is called hydrosol Or flower water. In the past were known: cornflower water, used as an eye drop, rose water, for beauty treatments and orange blossom water for flavoring in pastries and for baby care. It is the first floral smell of babies' lives because practically all pediatric products (talcum powder, softening creams, etc. are scented with bitter orange blossom (Neroli).
Following a law of 1985 which prohibited the retail sale of certain essential oils such as sage or hyssop (remarkable in asthma problems) and mugwort, I began to study with success, impact of the hydrosols of these prohibited essential oils. I have therefore produced many varieties of hydrosols such as fennel, savory, thyme, cloves, sage etc... for human and veterinary medicine and in particular to treat bees parasitized by varroa.

At that time we did not have current filtration equipment and my hydrosols, without preservatives, filled quite quickly with filaments (fungi) which prohibited their consumption and I gave up but if we are able to produce fresh hydrosols it is a brilliant therapy with which I have treated many people, especially babies.

THE DIFFUSION OF ESSENTIAL OILS

Breathing is the body's No. 1 function.

In fact, we breathe on average 15 to 20kg of air per day... so it is our main food. Essential oils diffused in the house have a protective action for the whole family. They stimulate breathing and immune defenses, destroy many potentially pathogenic germs, they have a stimulating or relaxing action, and provide a feeling of well-being. You can diffuse essential oils without risk by respecting reasonable diffusion times or use static diffusers, scent balls, or wooden diffuser caps, or even paper diffusers which bring a pleasant scent to your path like a scented smile.

    • SPECIFIC ADVICE

Essential oils can also be used orally. I prepare syrups for my children by mixing ravintsara and tea-tree in honey or in an organic cane sugar syrup and I give them a spoonful of it before leaving for school. For my part, as I have a little diabetes, I lap them, pure, from the palm of my hand according to my needs.

The needs of each person, moreover, are all different as we are all different ourselves; also I will be happy to respond personally to your requests to the extent of my skills to help you in your search.
